CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY WEEK 2006
February 12-18, 2006
CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY:
Kids Can Live With It!
Child Passenger Safety Week has been celebrated nationally since the early 1980s, when all 50 states passed laws making it necessary for drivers to restrain children too young to protect themselves in cars.
The special Child Passenger Safety Week observation, which takes place every year during the week of Valentine's Day, lets drivers know the importance of obtaining and using the correct restraint for every person, especially children, who rides in cars.
Cars come equipped with safety belts, and Safe Kids Worldwide recommends that everyone in the car who is big enough for the belts to fit properly use one. Generally, the adult safety belt does not properly fit people shorter than 4'9” or under 80 to 100 pounds. Extra steps must be taken to protect smaller occupants.
Protecting children in cars is a lifelong commitment. Children take 3 steps in infant seats, toddler seats and booster seats before graduating to the vehicle safety belt when they are between 8 and 12 years of age, are taller than 4'9” and weigh between 80 and 100 pounds.
Most parents protect infants and toddlers in car seats but many parents of booster age children (generally 4-8 years) skip the valuable booster seat step, moving their child to the adult safety belt much too soon. Booster seats help position the adult safety belt properly on the child's shoulders and hips providing a safer and more comfortable ride.
Always wear your safety belt and require everyone in your car to wear the right restraint on every ride! Finally, remember that all kids under 13 ride in a back seat. |
