Stormy skies mean it is time to prepare for tornado season

Every spring, weather nerds like me wait anxiously for cold air from Canada to collide with the warm air rising out of the Gulf of Mexico. And like clockwork, we watch mesocyclones (big thunderstorms to most people) build and build until they drop one of nature’s most deadly events, the tornado.

Smiling Boy

From the moment our babies start to crawl, the world is a magical place filled with new adventures and discoveries. We want to create an environment where kids have the freedom to explore and discover and have fun. That means taking a few precautions around the house to minimize the risk of serious injuries.

Safe Kids staff demonstrates an oversize model kitchen

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to experience the world as a toddler again? I, for one, have gotten so used to being an adult that I completely take for granted how enormous the world must seem to little kids.

Toddler behind gate to keep her away from poisoning dangers

When I was about five years old, my dad traveled to Germany on business and came back to our home in the Ukraine with some wonderful treats that I had never seen or tasted in my life. One of these treats was a carton of sweet, delicious pineapple juice. It was the most delightful thing I had ever tasted, and it didn’t take long to drink it all.

Toddler in bow and dress

This year, I got my Christmas present early – in March actually. That’s when my baby girl, Ruby, was born.

A first aid kit which is an essential part of disaster preperation

I’m a weather nerd. I’ve lived through hurricanes, blizzards, tornados, floods and other severe storms. I’ve only had to deal with minor earthquakes, which makes me happy.  I am a trained weather-spotter and am hoping to go tornado-chasing next year. I am also a FEMA-certified livestock disaster manager. I have weather apps on the phone that drive my cube mates crazy.

Surprised kid

It’s been almost exactly one year since I first set foot in the Safe Kids office and accepted a position to join the team.  And what a year it’s been.

I don’t currently have any children, but I do plan on having some in the far-off future. And I want to be a good mom.

Guest columnist Richard B. Schwamm talks about volunterring for Safe Kids

I am a parent of two beautiful young girls; and, my promise to them, above all other responsibilities in my life, is to protect them. It’s a non-negotiable obligation. It’s my highest priority. It’s an unflappable commitment. Period.  So, it’s that mission, goal and purpose that lead me to do everything I can to protect my children from foreseeable harm.

Child tipping over an unsecured TV

It’s that time of year again – the season to enjoy festive meals with family and friends, deck the halls with colorful trimmings and put together your holiday wish list.

Winston

This is the first installment of our New Moms blog series.  Check back periodically to read about the real life stories from the moms at Safe Kids.

Sometimes kids bounce and sometimes they don’t.  My son, Winston, is proof. I've lost count of how many times he's fallen really hard -- and he's only 3 years old
