Dustin Gessert receives a Badge of Courage Award

From his pictures, Dustin Gessert looks like he and actor Bradley Cooper were separated at birth. But Gessert, an officer with the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department, made his own headlines recently as the leading man in a rescue story.

On an 85-degree day at the end of May, Officer Gessert was responding to an unrelated child welfare 911 call when he came across what could have been a tragic situation. He had to look twice before he saw the small boy, left alone in a car.

Reagan Miller

Yes, my parents actually let me marry the guy who burned me. We were in high school and my future husband, John (the sweet guy he is), was cooking fried okra. The oil in the pan became too hot too fast. It went up in flames in a matter of seconds. I was standing back against the wall and could not get out of harm’s way quick enough. My right foot and leg caught on fire.

Keep your kids safe in the pool

Water, summer and kids having fun are synonymous. That was true for me when I was young, whether it involved a swimming pool, the ocean or even a big scoop of water ice in my native Philadelphia.

Call 911 if you see a child alone in a car.

Have you ever wondered if your actions can really make a difference? Last summer in Houston, Jason Nordman was walking in the parking lot outside an office building and spotted a baby crying in a car seat alone in a car. The windows were cracked a few inches and the doors were locked.

It's Global Youth Traffic Safety Month

National Organizations for Youth Safety hosted a Twitter Chat, inviting partner organizations, parents and youth leaders to join a conversation about the state of youth traffic safety today – and what we can do to improve it.

Have a safe Memorial Day

The calendar tells us that summer starts on June 21. But for me, summer starts on Memorial Day weekend, when I join aunts, uncles and cousins at the beach to open our old family cottage for the season.

Boating Safety Week Tips

Whether it’s in motorboats, sailboats, kayaks or canoes, there’s a good chance most of us will be hanging out in some kind of boat this spring or summer. After all, it’s one of the best ways for family and friends to spend time together and experience the freedom that comes from cruising on lakes, rivers and oceans.

mom and daughter in a pool

My family has always been large, but in the last few years we’ve grown significantly as my generation has made the transition from being the kids to being the parents. This just makes our time together even more enjoyable especially when we head to one of our favorite places: the beach.

Chris Clark at Safe Kids Day LA

Chris Clark is one of the top professional stunt cyclists in the country. I recently watched him perform on consecutive weekends at Safe Kids Day events in Los Angeles and New York. Kids of all ages marveled as he fearlessly jumped over ramps, hopped from obstacle to obstacle on just his back tire and performed stunts that took our breath away.

There is nothing that I can remember loving more as a kid than riding my bike with all of my friends. Every ride was an adventure and we would stay out as long as we could.

Now as an adult, I still hop on a bike every opportunity I get – and it’s especially fun to ride with my nephews, Jake, 4, and Nathan, 7, who are actually starting to keep up with me, which is saying something.

Kate Carr's Mom

Mother’s Day is here and it’s a perfect time to pay tribute to all the moms who have done so much to help us grow into the people we are today.

My mom, who just turned 80, has been on my mind recently. I have so many wonderful memories. And of course, like most of us, even some not-so-good memories during my teenage years. Sorry mom, I wasn’t always charming and easy.
