Safe Kids In and Around Cars
Hello Are You on That Seat Belt Tip? Booster or Seat Belt? In and Around Cars Show What You Know

How do you know when it’s time to use a seat belt
without a booster?

Answer a few questions
to find out!

  • Are you about 4’9” (57 inches) tall and weigh between 80 and 100 pounds?
  • Sit on the vehicle seat with your back and rear end flat against the back of the seat. Look at your knees. Do they bend at the seat edge?
  • Fasten the safety belt. Does the lap belt stay low on your hips or high on the tops of your legs without moving up to your stomach?
  • Does the shoulder belt stay on your shoulder or collarbone without touching your face or neck?
  • Are you comfortable sitting like this (with the lap and shoulder belt fitting properly) without slouching for your whole ride?

Yes or No

  • If you answered “no” to any of these questions, a low-back booster and a seat belt will have you riding in style.
  • If you answered “yes” to all of the questions, a seat belt alone is right for you.

And remember, never put the shoulder belt
under your arm or behind your back.
