Safe Kids In and Around Cars
Hello Are You on That Seat Belt Tip? Booster or Seat Belt? In and Around Cars Show What You Know

There is a lot more to know about being
safe around cars and trucks!

Spot the Tot

Kids, especially your younger siblings and neighbors, should never play near parked cars.

  • Thousands of kids go to the hospital every year because they get hit by cars in driveways and parking lots when drivers couldn’t see them.
  • The driver should always walk around the car to check for kids, toys and pets before starting the engine.
  • You can remind drivers to make sure the area around the car is clear before it moves.

Never Leave Your Child Alone

The inside of a car can get as hot as an oven in just a few minutes when it’s warm and the sun is shining.

  • Even when it’s only about 80 degrees outside, the inside of a car can get hot enough to cook an egg on the dashboard!
  • It’s never safe for a kid to stay alone in a car.

Preventing Trunk Entrapment

Trunks are for things like groceries and laundry. It’s never a safe place to hide or play.

  • Newer cars made after 2001 have a glow-in-the-dark handle that can pop open the trunk in case of an emergency.
  • Ask an adult to show you how it works, but never play with the handle.
