Safety Tips

Nationwide, pedestrian injuries are the number two cause of accidental death among children ages 5 to 14. Each year in the United States, approximately 650 children are killed and 43,000 treated in emergency rooms as a result of pedestrian injuries.

Cost

The total annual cost of traffic-related pedestrian death and injury among children ages 14 and under is $5.2 billion

Legislative Efforts

There are a multitude of laws and policies that affect child pedestrian injuries, including low speed limits in residential areas, providing for pedestrian walkways, providing for crossing guards and requiring that pedestrians not cross streets at locations other than designated crosswalks.  But laws and policies are not enough; parents and caregivers must also work to keep children safe.

Education

Safe Kids offers tips on how to help keep children safe when walking.
